Song Lyrics

The Gifts of You

You could not give me wealth or fame

But you gave to me your honored name.

You could not give me crowns of gold,

But I always had a hand to hold.

You could not give me royal birth,

But I never questioned my great worth.

You could not give me everything

But I am richer than a king.

You gave me love that would last forever.

You gave me heritage, noble and true.

These are the gifts that I always will treasure.

These are the gifts of you.

You could have had a fine career

But instead, I always had you near.

You could have sailed the oceans wide,

But I was nurtured by your side.

You could have been a rising star,

But a mother and a queen you are,

Your footsteps showed me what to do,

And I grew tall by watching you.

You gave me love that would last forever.

You gave me heritage, noble and true.

These are the gifts that I always will treasure.

These are the gifts of you.

You never gave the gifts that all the world could see,

But who could ever name the price of what you gave to me?

You gave me love that would last forever.

You gave me heritage, noble and true.

These are the gifts that I always will treasure.

These are the gifts of you.

The Story Behind the Song

This is a song I originally wrote as a Mother's Day tribute for my mother in 1987. I am grateful for her example and love for me throughout my life. She always gave of herself for others, and I was blessed to have been nurtured at her side. As Abraham Lincoln said of his mother, I too echo these words: "All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother."
