Song Lyrics

When You Touch the Life

You are called to serve and lead with love,

You have so much that you can share,

And the power you need will come from above

As you teach them and show them you care.

Just take a hand in yours and lead the way

The need is everywhere.

When you touch the life of just one person,

Then you touch the lives of many more.

If you save them now from sin and heartache

You'll save generations yet in store.

You can find the key to changing a heart

When the Spirit is your guide,

You will feel its power if you will start

To nourish your faith inside.

Prepare your heart to know the Shepherd's voice

So you can share His light.

When you touch the life of just one person,

Then you touch the lives of many more.

If you save them now from sin and heartache

You'll save generations yet in store.

You may never know the difference you make

From the things you do and say,

It may help them do whatever it takes

To follow the better way.

Just do your best and you can be the tool

That God can use today.

When you touch the life of just one person,

Then you touch the lives of many more.

If you save them now from sin and heartache

You'll save generations yet in store.

The Story Behind the Song

The inspiration for this song first came while I was serving as young women president years ago (around 1994). I knew how important this time of life was for these young women, and how our efforts could make a difference, not just for that time, but could also affect generations to come. The words and music came to me: "When you touch the life of one young woman, then you touch the lives of many more; if you save her now from sin and heartache, you'll save generations yet in store." This was a start for the song, but for years, this is all I had. I somehow could not find the inspiration for the rest of the song. Then, more than ten years later, in 2005, I was called to teach our teacher preparation course at church. It was then that the inspiration came for the rest of the song. It was no longer just about young women. It was about the difference a teacher can make. Then the song came together easily, and I shared this song with the members of the class. I have since realized that it can be a song about missionaries or anyone who makes a difference in the life of someone else.
