Song Lyrics

The Wonders of Utah

Have you seen her sky on a summer night
When the setting sun paints a wondrous sight?
See the moon reflect on a lake so still.
Hear the distant rain upon a mountain hill.

Have you seen her trees on an autumn day
On a painted mountainside or a quiet bay?
See the shadows cast from an arch’s bend–
Nature’s sculpture carved by time and by the wind.

From the Great Salt Lake to the Canyonlands,
See how nature’s beauty unfolds
from the master painter’s hand
Lofty mountain peaks, painted desert sand,
The wonders of Utah, our beautiful mountain land.

Have you seen her snow in the winter time?
Silent diamonds sparkle on the majestic pine.
Snowy mountain peaks touched with evergreen,
Hear the whisper of the silent winter scene.

Have you seen her flowers when the springtime comes?
Traces of a rainbow, touched by the sun.
Smell the fragrant air from the blossomed trees,
Feel the freshness of a springtime mountain breeze.

From the Great Salt Lake to the Canyonlands,
See how nature’s beauty unfolds
from the master painter’s hand
Lofty mountain peaks, painted desert sand,
The wonders of Utah, our beautiful mountain land.

You can have your sunny beaches
Or the hills of Tennessee.
Take the lights of Old Manhatten,
But that’s not the place for me.

From the Great Salt Lake to the Canyonlands,
See how nature’s beauty unfolds
from the master painter’s hand
Lofty mountain peaks, painted desert sand,
The wonders of Utah, our beautiful mountain land.

The Story Behind the Song

I wrote this song in 1996 to commemorate the centennial of Utah becoming a state. Utah truly is a beautiful state with many natural wonders. There is beauty in each season, and there are beautiful places to see all around Utah. People talk about the wonders of the world. Well, I think we have some pretty amazing wonders in Utah. I wanted to capture those wonders in song. What better way than to see the wonders of Utah through the four seasons. I arranged the harmony of the song for my trio “Nostalgia” to sing as part of the provo Freedom Festival and several Utah Centennial events. For one of our performances we put together a slide show with pictures that went along with the song. This song continues to be one of my favorites to share, and I have since performed it with my daughters and also the Time Out singing group that I sang with.
